Cleveland-Cliffs Inc

Education is a core giving pillar of the Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation. In Marquette County, support for education programming is evident through longstanding partnerships with local schools and universities.

For nearly three decades, Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation has contributed towards Western Marquette County Partners in Education, a program that provides teachers with mini-grants on an annual basis to support education in the classroom across four school districts: Ishpeming, Negaunee, Westwood and Republic-Michigamme. Since the program’s inception in the early 1990’s, over $160,000 has been provided to teachers to purchase classroom materials of their choice and enhance their curriculum. Examples include books, technological equipment, materials for arts programming, and educational games.

The foundation has made large scale gifts to individual educational institutions. Gifts are made towards traditional focus areas such as professorships, classroom materials and support for STEM curricula. Donations are also made for projects that recognize the important role that schools play in contributing to student wellness and the function they serve as gathering places for the community.

Recent gifts include:

Northern Michigan University (NMU)Molecular Genetics Fund and the Cliffs Legacy Endowed Scholarship
Major gift to the Molecular Genetics Fund and the Cliffs Legacy Endowed Scholarship. Through the Molecular Genetics Fund, NMU has been able to acquire equipment and implement programming in genomic medicine, as well as provide training and education for lab professionals in the field of molecular genetics.

The Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation’s most recent gift was a five year chaired professorship in the Chemical Engineering department.

Partner Testimony

Negaunee Public Schools is rich in history when it comes to academic and athletic success.  Our staff and students are proud to be called Miners.  In the summer of 2015, our District, with the support of the Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation, made a major upgrade to our football complex.  A concern we have had for several years was the safety of the existing press box at Miner Stadium.  Not only was it old (and rusting in areas), but we were running out of space as radio announcers and students from our High School Broadcasting have joined the normal group of PA announcers, clock runners, coaches, etc. Through the foundation's donation, we have a new, state of the art, press box that our opposition envies.  Not only is it safe, but it has the technology necessary to provide media personnel with the tools to cover our contests in a quality manner.

Cliffs has been a pillar in Ishpeming for over 100 years and been a great supporter of our community and its schools.  The Cliffs Foundation continues this legacy by providing additional funding to help our schools enhance education through technology.  We are extremely grateful for the support Cliffs continues to provide to our students.

Cleveland-Cliffs has been an outstanding community partner. They've made generous donations to us as far back as we can remember. Recently, one of their biggest monetary contributions helped us build our Patriot Performing Arts Theatre. Our theatre rivals the finest theatres in major cities with it's beautiful layout and state-of-the-art sound, lighting and technological capabilities. Our theatre is just one example of Cleveland Cliffs' generous philanthropic giving. They donate to our individual classrooms and our district overall year in and year out and help make our school a valued community asset.
