Empowering Our Employees, Connecting with Our Communities

One of our most important stakeholder groups are the local communities that host our operations. We engage directly with residents, elected officials, community leaders and organizations to foster open communication and ensure we are a good neighbor. Through the Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation, we support important needs of our communities. Through our dedicated employees, we donate our time and expertise to meaningful causes.

Stories of Impact

Ensuring Employee Health & Safety

We strive every day to provide safe and well-maintained work environments for our employees, contractors, and visitors. Safe production is our primary core value as we continue toward achieving a zero-injury culture at our facilities. Our Health & Safety program prioritizes:

  • Monitoring and measuring our safety performance
  • Investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions
  • Sharing best practices and learnings to create opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Engaging with employees at all levels of the organization, from leadership to the shop floor
  • Benchmarking within our organization and against established industry standards

Employee & Union Engagement

The hardworking, union-represented men and women of Cliffs are the lifeblood of our Company. At Cliffs, we know that maintaining strong, positive relationships with labor unions is key to our long-term growth. We recognize and respect the right of our employees to freely associate and collectively bargain, and we do not engage in harassment, intimidation or retaliation for their efforts to bargain collectively.

More than 90% of our hourly workforce is represented by three prominent unions: United Steelworkers (USW), United Auto Workers (UAW) and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW). Our employees operate and maintain our facilities, and are ultimately responsible for safely delivering a quality product internally and to our customers. Therefore, we engage with our unions as business partners, and together we have achieved a number of successes that benefit our business and our employees alike.

Through our OneCliffs Way of Doing Business, we outline our Core Values, which include Trust, Respect and Open Communication. To Cliffs, this means encouraging and accepting different views, and supporting and advancing gender and racial diversity. Further, we do not make employment-related decisions nor do we discriminate based on race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, mental or physical disability, veteran status, sexual orientation or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. We strive to make Cliffs a safe place to work for all. Harassment and/or intimidation are not tolerated anywhere in our Company, and we hope our people make a career at Cliffs doing meaningful and challenging work.

Cleveland-Cliffs is Official Steel Partner of Meyer Shank Racing

As the largest supplier of steel to North America’s automotive industry, it was only natural that Cleveland-Cliffs partner with IndyCar racing organization Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) as its official steel partner.  MSR, based in Cleveland-Cliffs’ home state of Ohio, boasts two championship drivers on its team – Four-Time Indianapolis 500 Winner Helio Castroneves, who drives the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda, and Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar Series Champion Simon Pagenaud, who drives the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda.

Additionally, Cleveland-Cliffs Tubular Components and MSR have been collaborating on leveraging the Company’s advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) tubing capabilities to MSR’s advantage.  For example,  the teams collaborated, designed and tested newer, lightweight steel shop exhaust mufflers for the MSR crew to use during vehicle maintenance (shown in inset above).

Upcoming appearances for Meyer Shank Racing can be found at their official website.  Cleveland-Cliffs looks forward to a continued partnership of automotive performance, technological innovation and checkered flags!
